Resolution
#5: Lake Tahoe National Scenic Forest and Recreation Area
|
|
Since Lake Tahoe's status
as both a national and international treasure was recognized in
President Clinton's forum at Tahoe in 1997, there has been increased
interest in measures to restore the lake's clarity and its ecological
health. However, such measures require funding and special
management based upon good science. Both the state of California
and Nevada, as well as the Federal government, have attempted to
provide
monies for this effort. However, the amount of money needed is
greater than these sources can provide. Senator Dianne Feinstein
of California has introduced S.1192, the Lake Tahoe Restoration Act,
creating a Lake Tahoe national Scenic Forest and Recreation Area with
special funding, and she has been joined by Senators Barbara Boxer,
Harry Reid and Dick Bryan. She hopes to pass the bill during this
session. |
|
ACTION: FWOC strongly
supports legislation to create the lake Tahoe National Scenic Forest
and Recreation Area introduced by Senator Feinstein and co-sponsored by
Senators Boxer, Bryan and Reid. Letters of support for substitute
S.1192 should be sent to all members of the Senate and to President
Clinton. |
