Resolution
#8: Black Rock/High Rock National Conservation Area
|
|
Several conservation
groups have been working since 1990 to secure special protection for
the Black Rock/High Rock area in northwestern Nevada. This area
includes the Applegate Emigrant trail, one of the best preserved trails
in the United States where one can still see the wagon traces. It
is also an area of prehistoric interest with many artifacts and remains
of creatures such as the woolly mammoth. The hot springs contain
rare pupfish. Recreational use has increased enormously, and the
Bureau of Land Management's two offices have a difficult time managing
the area at present because of lack of budget and personnel. The
area also includes nine Wilderness Study Areas (WSA) one of them (the
east arm of the Black Rock Desert) being the latest WSA in the
U.S. Both Senator Bryan and Senator Reid have agreed to introduce
legislation in this session to make this area a National Conservation
Area. |
|
ACTION: FWOC strongly
supports legislation to create a Black Rock/High Rock National
Conservation Area in northwest Nevada, including mineral withdrawal of
the area in order to preserve the viewshed and the designation of nine
contiguous wilderness study areas as wilderness. Letters of
strong support for this legislation need to be sent to Senator Richard
Bryan, and Senator Harry Reid, Senate Office Building, Washington, DC
20510, as well as Bruce Babbitt, Secretary of the Interior, and
President Clinton. |
