RESOLUTION
#10: MONUMENT STATUS FOR THE ROUGH AND READY CREEK WATERSHED IN
SOUTHERN OREGON (Obsidians, Shirley Cameron)
|
|
The Federation of Western Outdoor Clubs
supports National Monument status for the Rough and Ready Creek
Watershed in southern Oregon. |
|
The Klamath-Siskiyou
bioregion is one of seven "Areas of Global Botanical Significance" in
North America and supports the most diverse conifer forest in the
world, with 31 coniferous species. There are at least 17 special
status animal species. The area remains free from logging,
mining, exotic plants, and development, and is therefore an important
area for scientific study. |
|
The Rough and Ready Creek
watershed is threatened by a proposed nickel strip mine and a
4,380-acre mineral patent application. The Forest Service
received more than 4,000 comments in opposition to the mine.
Proclaiming Rough and Ready Creek a National Monument would close the
area to mineral entry and would prompt an examination to determine the
validity of existing mining claims. Purchase of valid claims
could be financed with Land and Water conservation funds. |
|
Please contact: Dan
Glickman, Secretary of Agriculture, President Clinton, Secretary of the
Interior, Bruce Babbitt, and Senator Ron Wyden to ask that a national
monument be established. |
