RESOLUTION
#11: OPPOSITION TO DRILLING FOR OIL IN THE ARCTIC WILDLIFE REFUGE
(Obsidians, Shirley Cameron) (Reaffirming Resolution 12, 1999 and
Resolution 14, 1986)
|
|
The Federation of Western Outdoor Clubs
reaffirms its opposition to all oil drilling in the Arctic National
Wildlife Refuge in Alaska. |
|
As gasoline prices rise,
there is a pressure to drill for oil everywhere, even in the Alaska
National Wildlife Refuge which is a small, pristine area on the North
Slope. (The remainder of the North Slope is open for
drilling.) A study by the U.S. Geological Survey estimates that
the amount of oil that could be produced by drilling in the wildlife
refuge would supply only 51 days of fuel for use in the United States
at
the cost of damaging wildlife habitat and severely impacting the last
remnants of the pristine Arctic cost of Alaska. |
|
Please contact: Local
Congresspersons (Senators and Representatives) and Presidential
Candidates and ask them to oppose all drilling in the Alaska National
Wildlife Refuge. |
