RESOLUTION
#15: OPPOSE THE PROPOSED SAN FRANCISCO AIRPORT EXPANSION (Contra Costas
Hills Club, Charlotte Weber)
|
|
The Federation of Western Outdoor Clubs
opposes the proposal to reconfigure the runways at the San Francisco,
CA Airport because it would require two square miles of additional fill
in San Francisco Bay. |
|
Diking, filling, and
development of San Francisco Bay have shrunk the Bay by one-third of
its original size and destroyed 90 percent of its tidal wetlands.
The Bay is an irreplaceable resource, already in a fragile condition
biologically. A panel of scientists has determined that the
proposed fill could require 90 million cubic yards of soil and
adversely affect aquatic animals, plants, birds, and fish (including
spawning herring and endangered salmon that migrate through the
Bay. The proposed fill to accommodate long runways could change
the currents and constrict tidal action in South San Francisco Bay. |
|
Please contact: Federal and
State (California) Delegations, the Airport Commission, and the press
to express opposition to the proposed plan. Comprehensive,
regional and statewide transportation planning is needed. The
proposed expense of $3.5 billion should be used to create
"environmentally friendly" transportation systems. |
