RESOLUTION
#17: OPPOSITION TO A HIGH LEVEL NUCLEAR WASTE DUMP AT YUCCA MOUNTAIN,
NEVADA (Toiyabe Chapter, Sierra Club, Marge Sill)
|
|
The Federation of Western Outdoor Clubs
opposes "fast-track" legislation in Congress to bypass the national
Environmental Policy Act and establish a proposed High-Level Nuclear
Waste Dump at Yucca Mountain, Nevada. |
|
The Yucca Mountain site in
Nevada has been selected by the U.S. Congress as the only site to be
studied for a repository of high-level nuclear waste for the next
10,000 years. Current research has revealed that there are many
problems with the site, including possible ground water
contamination. Flaws in the metal of the "casks" which are
proposed to contain high-level nuclear wastes, and the high level of
seismic activity in the area would be likely to cause the casks to
break and leak. Wastes would then migrate "downstream" into Death
Valley National Park. |
|
Other countries have
adopted different strategies for disposing of high-level nuclear
wastes, but Congress has refused to consider these methods.
Instead, Congress adopted a bill to bypass environmental
regulations. Thankfully, President Clinton vetoed the bill.
The Democratic candidate for President has promised to oppose this
legislation; however, the Republican nominee has not committed himself
to a position. |
|
Please contact: The
Presidential Candidates and ask them to veto any legislation that
by-passes NEPA regulations for the Yucca Mountain proposal.
Request that both candidates, Congress, and federal agencies explore
other, less environmentally damaging, methods for high level nuclear
waste disposal. |
