RESOLUTION
#19: OPPOSING EXPANSION OF FORT IRWIN IN SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY,
CALIFORNIA (Sierra Club, SMRCC Desert Committee, Bob Haage)
|
|
The Federation of Western Outdoor Clubs
opposes the expansion of Fort Irwin in California and supports better
utilization of lands in that military reservation. |
|
The U.S. Army is proposing
to expand Fort Irwin into the Paradise and Superior Valleys and other
sites. Such expansion of lands of a military reservation
endangers the survival of the desert tortoise in the western Mojave
Desert. The habit is the finest tortoise habitat in
California. Currently the estimated population there is 10,000
tortoises, close to the number needed to maintain genetic health of the
species. It is almost certain that the tortoises could not
survive either the expansion of the military reservation (due to likely
intense military action) or re-location to another habitat. |
|
Please contact: Local
Congressional Delegations and ask them to notify you when a formal bill
or rider comes before them. Ask them to oppose expansion of Fort
Irwin. |
