RESOLUTION
#2: DANGERS OF CONCENTRATED ANIMAL FEEDING OPERATIONS (CAFO) IN IDAHO
(Idaho Environmental Council, Marty Huebner)
|
|
The Federation of Western Outdoor Clubs
opposes a proposal for a 590,000 hog CAFO in the State of Idaho.
The FWOC urges the Idaho Department of Environmental Quality and the
Environmental Protection Agency to bring before the public the serious
questions regarding the environmental and public health dangers of such
large CAFOs. The FWOC also urges the State of Idaho to ensure
clean-up of any existing CAFOs prior to granting permits for new CAFOs. |
|
Presently there are huge
cattle CAFOs in Idaho which are causing water pollution and fish
kills. The proposed hog CAFO would generate vast quantities of
manure and urine which would accumulate in the planned evaporative
ponds. 200 pounds of hydrogen sulfide and 25,000 pounds of
ammonia would be generated each day. Current methods for handling
such wastes are woefully inadequate. Historically the
environmental effects of such large CAFOs have been unacceptable. |
|
Please contact: The Idaho
Department of Environmental Quality and oppose the proposed hog CAFO
(and any additional DAFOs) on the basis of air, surface water, and
groundwater pollution. Mike McMasters, Idaho Department of
Environmental Quality. Twin Falls Regional Office, 601 Pole Line
Road, Twin Falls, ID 83301.
