FEDERATION OF WESTERN OUTDOOR CLUBS

RESOLUTION #20: PROPOSED MADRONE WALL PRESERVATION IN CLACKAMAS COUNTY, OREGON (Ptarmigans, Joe Hargrave)

The Federation of Western Outdoor Clubs opposes the destruction of the Madrone Wall  from hard rock quarrying and supports and endorses efforts to preserve this amazing civic treasure.
The Madrone Wall is a natural basalt cliff face surrounded by a stunning and unique grove of Pacific Madrone trees and a thriving wetland located in the metropolitan area of Portland, Oregon.  This amazing civic treasure is threatened by destruction by hard rock quarrying.  Clackamas County owns the forty-four acre plot of land on which the Madrone Wall is located.  For decades, this beautiful natural area has been a revered recreational destination for rock climbers, hikers, and equestrians who have enjoyed the natural geologic features, pristine forests, wetlands, and unrivaled scenic views of the lower Clackamas River Basin.
In 1997, Clackamas County officials closed the Madrone Wall area to public access due to a permit request to allow active quarrying to begin at the site.  Recreationists quickly reacted and incorporated as the Madrone Wall Preservation Committee (MWPC), an Oregon public benefit corporation, with the primary goals of preventing quarrying in the area and preserving the land for recreation and protecting it from development.  The MWPC, River Basin Conservation Alliance, a local group of concerned citizens, to protect the Madrone Wall area from an outrageous and irreversible demise.  These groups have constructively enjoined the Clackamas County Board of Commissioners to seek preservation of the Madrone Wall area by sale or transfer of the land.
Please contact: The MWPC website at http://www.bwalsh.com/madrone to learn more about the Madrone Wall and contact Bill Kennemer, Chair, Larry Sowa, Commissioner, and Michael Jordan, 906 Main Street, Oregon City, Oregon 97045-1882.  Phone 503/655-8581.  Email: bcc@co.clackamas.or.us. Please send copies of comments to: Keith Daellenbach, Director, MWPC kdaellenbach@att.net or 3129 N.E. 65th Avenue, Portland, Oregon 97213.
