RESOLUTION
#8: STUDY OF CURRENT SLUDGE MANAGEMENT PRACTICES ON FARM AND FOREST
LAND (Friends of Discovery Park, Nancy Kroening)
|
|
The Federation of Western Outdoor Clubs
urges federal and state and local agencies to examine more carefully
the effects of current sludge management practices on farmlands and
forest lands. |
|
At present municipal and
industrial "waste" sludges are being partially treated before being
placed on farm and forest lands, including recreational lands.
The effects of the live pathogens and toxics in municipal and
industrial wastes have not been adequately studied. Effects (of
sludge application) on aquifers, people who recreate in the
out-of-doors, animals who live downwind, the health of the nation's
food supplies, and the long-term health of the soil need further
investigation. Thousands of truckloads of untreated or partially
treated sludge are being placed on rural lands everyday. Some
practices may be too dangerous to continue. |
|
Please contact: President
Clinton and the Centers for Disease Control to request a new look at
current sludge management practices. Ask the Presidential
candidates for a statement on sludge management practices. |
