RESOLUTION
#11: "KITTY LITTER" MINE IN HUNGRY VALLEY, NEVADA
|
|
The Oil-Dri Corporation of
Nevada has submitted a "plan of operations" to the Bureau of Land
Management (BLM) to mine "kitty litter" clay on 5527 acres in Hungry
Valley, Nevada (just north of the cities of Reno and Sparks and
immediately adjacent to the Reno-Sparks Indian Colony). It has
been determined that this clay is a locatable mineral and that,
therefore, the project falls under the 1872 Mining Law. |
|
A draft Environmental
Impact Statement has been issued by the BLM. This draft is
deficient in addressing problems of dust, water use, traffic, noise,
and effects on citizens who live nearby. |
|
A coalition of affected
citizens (both from the colony and from nearby neighborhoods) and
environmental groups has been formed to rally forces against this urban
mine. The Washoe County Commission must issue a special use
permit for the mine. The Washoe County Planning Commission has
raised many concerns about the project, which the County Commission has
echoed. A final EIS will be released in August or early September. |
|
The Federation of Western
Outdoor Clubs opposes the siting of large "kitty litter" mine in an
urban area of Washoe County adjacent to several housing developments,
including the Reno-Sparks Indian Colony of Hungry Valley, and urges the
Washoe County Commission not to issue a special use permit for this
mine. |
