RESOLUTION
#12: SOUTHERN NEVADA WILDERNESS
|
Senator Harry Reid of
Nevada has indicated that he intends to introduce a Southern Nevada
Lands bill in the U.S. Senate, with Senator John Ensign of Nevada as a
co-sponsor, as early as October 2001. One of the principal
reasons for this bill is to protect a large amount of southern Nevada
land as designated wilderness, which would counteract the sprawl that
is now occurring (Las Vegas is the fastest growing city in the United
States) and would provide protection for endangered species and
archeological treasures. |
A number of groups,
including Friends of Nevada Wilderness and the Toiyabe Chapter of the
Sierra Club, have put together a citizens proposal for wilderness on
four kinds of federal land: BLM, Forest Service, Fish and
Wildlife Service, and National Park Service holdings. This group
is working closely with Senator Reid's office on this proposed
legislation. |
The Federation of Western
Outdoor Clubs strongly supports this citizens' proposal for wilderness
in southern Nevada. |
