RESOLUTION
#21: FUEL CELL TECHNOLOGY
|
Despite the passage of the
new Clean Air Act in 1990 to reduce acid rain, urban smog, ozone
depletion, and emissions of toxic gases and vehicle exhausts, studies
ten years later show that California, among other states, is losing the
battle against dirty air. |
While the energy crisis
has prompted regulators to allow production of electricity by
marginally polluting plants, the bulk of air pollution comes from
tailpipes of internal combustion engines. With increasing
population in an active economy, pollution from internal combustion
engines is compounded by the greater number of such engines and their
increasing size. |
Today's growing air
pollution problem poses health threats to people, domestic animals,
wildlife, forests and other plant life, as well as to our enjoyment of
the beauty of our environment. It is, in addition, both an
economic expense and a visual impediment. |
The Federation of Western
Outdoor Clubs strongly supports funding for immediate research and
development of fuel cell technology in order to alleviate growing air
pollution problems and global warming. |
