RESOLUTION
#26: SKY PEAKS WILDERNESS BILL
|
A group of northwest
environmental groups have worked together to develop a proposal to
designate a 110,000-acre area in the Stevens Pass/central Cascade
mountain region of Washington State as wilderness under the National
Wilderness Preservation System. The name of the proposed new
wilderness area is the "Sky Peaks Wilderness." |
The Sky Peaks area was
first identified in 1984 as an area that should have been included in
the Alpine Lakes Wilderness. Protection of the area as wilderness
now has the support of the Senators Patty Murray and Maria Cantwell,
as well as Representative Rick Larson. Other members of the
Washington congressional delegation will also be invited to sign on --
now that the scope, name and description of the area has been finalized
in a briefing book that is currently being created to present to
Congress and the public. The matter is expected to be on the
Congressional agenda in the late fall of 2002. |
The Federation of Western
Outdoor Clubs supports the establishment of the proposed "Sky Peaks
Wilderness" as part of the National Preservation System. |
