RESOLUTION
#3: SALMON BAY NATURAL AREA
|
|
There is but one
remaining undeveloped wooded bank along the Salmon Bay Waterway at the
Puget Sound end of the Seattle Ship Canal (all the rest have been
developed). The land is important to the restoration of
endangered and threatened salmon because it is located immediately
upland of a major "nursery" area where young fish feed before
continuing on to the deep and more open waters of the Central Puget
Sound Basin. |
|
Every development in the
immediate shoreline area contributes its share of pollution to
nearshore marine waters. The plan envisioned by Groundswell
Northwest and the Ballard Open Space Coalition is designed to serve as
a demonstration project for enhancing and restoring urban estuarine
habitat and educating the public on its importance in the life cycle of
salmon and other wildlife. This use would provide little or no
pollution to nearshore marine waters. |
|
The Federation of Western Outdoor Clubs urges city, country, and state elected officials and agency staff in Washington state to find a way to acquire the 34th Avenue Northwest site between Hiram's Restaurant and the publicly owned land at the Ballard Locks. The site should remain forested, and a demonstration project (see above) to enhance salmon habitat and educate the public should be funded and implemented. |
