RESOLUTION
#34: ORCA PASS INTERNATIONAL STEWARDSHIP AREA
|
The marine area and
intertidal zones of the region bordered by Canada's southern Gulf
Islands and the United States of America's San Juan Islands are among
the most biologically rich and sensitive marine regions in the
world. An Orca Pass International Marine Stewardship Area is
proposed here. |
Ongoing increases in human
population, development, pollution and over-harvesting are
significantly degrading the marine habitat in the Orca Pass area,
reducing the diversity and abundance of marine plants and animals, and
eroding the economic, cultural, recreational, and spiritual values of
the region |
The Orca Pass
International Marine Stewardship Area would be managed collaboratively
-- with the full participation of First Nations and Native Tribes,
federal, state, provincial, and local governments and the involvement
of residents and user groups. Management objectives would
include: 1) protection and restoration of important habitats, with
specific attention to reefs and intertidal and near-shore marine zones
that benefit the widest diversity of species, 2) establishment of
specific protected zones within the area based on science and local
traditional knowledge and ongoing monitoring of them; 3) measuring and
reporting on the health, abundance, and diversity of key species, 4)
increasing and sustaining healthy populations of key species of fish,
marine mammals, marine birds, marine plants, crustaceans, mollusks, and
other invertebrates, and 5) preventing pollution by petroleum products,
toxic chemicals, sewage, plastics, and exotic species of land and water. |
The Federation of Western
Outdoor Clubs supports the establishment of the Orca Pass International
Stewardship Area under cooperative management by the Governments and
First Nations of British Columbia and Canada and the Governments and
Tribes of Washington State and the United States of America. |
