RESOLUTION
#36: BRITISH COLUMBIA'S THREATENED HABITAT AND SPECIES
|
British Columbia's forest
ecosystems are being logged at excessive rates. This logging in
combination with subsidies is leading to the decline of threatened and
endangered habitat and species there. |
British Columbia is one of
the last remaining areas in North America with intact old growth forest
ecosystems. There is a minimal amount of environmental regulation
there, though, and enforcement is lax in comparison to the United
States. A history of producing high volumes of wood at costs
which are kept low by subsidies (which is well documented) gives rise
to concerns. |
The Federation of Western
Outdoor Clubs calls upon the Canadian government to protect salmon
habitat and endangered species and also to eliminate subsidies to the
forest industry. The Federation calls upon the Premier of British
Columbia to fulfill his election pledge of "no subsidies to business,"
and in particular to the forest industry. |
