RESOLUTION
#4: CREATION OF SONORAN DESERT NATIONAL PARK AND PRESERVE
|
|
The Federally owned
Sonoran Desert lands of southwestern Arizona constitute a public
wildland resource of extraordinary and inestimable value for this and
future generations. These desert wildlands display unique scenic,
historic, archaeological, environmental, ecological, wildlife,
cultural, scientific, educational, and recreational values for hiking,
camping, scientific study, and scenic appreciation. |
|
The public land resources
of the Sonoran Desert now face increasing threats by adverse
development and use pressures which would impair, dilute, and destroy
their public and natural values. This southwest region of the
Sonoran Desert, embracing wilderness lands, a unit of the National Park
System, and other federal lands, constitutes a cohesive unit posing
unique and difficult resource protection and management
challenges. Consolidation of these land units (statutorily
designated already) is needed to afford full protection, which the
public land values of the Sonoran Desert merit. |
|
The Federation of Western
Outdoor Clubs supports the establishment by the United States Congress
of the Proposed Sonoran Desert National Park and Preserve in
southwestern Arizona, including Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument,
the Cabeza Prieta National Wildlife Refuge, and the Barry M. Goldwater
Range. |
