SUPPORT FOR BLM'S NATIONAL LANDSCAPE CONSERVATION SYSTEM

The National Landscape Conservation System is a system of specially protected areas under the management of the Bureau of Land Management. It includes monuments, wilderness areas, wilderness study areas, wild and scenic rivers, historic trails, and various conservation areas.

This relatively new system stems from a view now held in the BLM that it no longer merely manages livestock and mining but is an agency that manages some of the most scenic and fragile lands in the western United States, particularly in California, Oregon, Nevada, Idaho, and Utah.

So far, the present administration has not attempted to dismantle this system, but it needs strong public support if it is to survive and its promise is to be realized.

The Federation of Western Outdoor Clubs strongly supports the National Landscape Conservation System and its goal of protecting special areas under the man agement of the Bureau of Land Management.

For further information, please contact state directors of the BLM for the various western states.
