OPPOSE ANTI-WILDERNESS BILL

"America's Wilderness Protection Act" (H.R. 1153), introduced by Representative Otter (R-ID) and several other anti-wilderness representatives, would immediately drop interim wilderness protection for over eight million acres of BLM Wilderness Study Areas (WSAs) and guarantee that these lands could never be studied again for wilderness status without another act of Congress. It would also drop protection for lands that have been identified for wildernesss consideration by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the Forest Service and the National Park Service. Passage of such a bill would ensure that millions of acres of wilderness--quality lands would be devastated by exploitative uses such as open pit mining and overrun by off-road vehicle use.

The Federation of Western Outdoor Clubs opposes H.R. 1153, the deceptively named "America's Wilderness Protection Act," which would have the effect of freezing our national wilderness system to the areas that Congress has designated and ensure that millions of acres of wilderness-quality lands would be lost.
