SUPPORT URBAN GROWTH BOUNDARIESThe population of the west coast is growing exponentially, and the development community is reveling in the growing housing market and the fact that they control local land use decision-making bodies through campaign contributions. For over a decade, California conservation groups have advocated the preservation of open space outside existing urban areas and creating incentives for compact new growth areas and redesigned, redeveloped areas. An urban growth boundary is an officially mapped and adopted line that clearly differentiates land zoned for urbanization and those zoned for conservation, agriculture, or open space. Such boundaries discourage land speculation and provide a strong growth management tool to control sprawl--while protecting farmlands, watersheds, parks, and potential parks. The Federation of Western Outdoor Clubs strongly supports cities and counties in their efforts to adopt urban growth boundaries. next >> |
