SUPPORT CITIZENS' PROPOSAL FOR EASTERN NEVADA WILDERNESSLincoln and White counties in eastern Nevada have more than three million acres of de facto wilderness on public lands. Forty roadless areas of high wilderness quality have been identified, studied, photographed and mapped by the Nevada Wilderness Coalition. These areas, on lands administered by the Bureau of Land Management, the Forest Service, and the Fish and Wildlife Service, exhibit great opportunities for solitude and primitive recreation and are also important for the protection of wildlife habitat and cultural resources. The principal threat to these areas comes from unrestrained off-road vehicle use by invaders from southern Nevada, southern California, and Utah. The Federation of Western Outdoor Clubs (FWOC) has a long history of supporting wilderness designation for qualifying lands. Furthermore the FWOC has encouraged Congress to designate wildernesses that are not encumbered by special provisions that allow activities which are not allowed by the Wilderness Act of 1964. The Federation of Western Outdoor Clubs strongly supports wilderness designation for the lands contained in the citizens' proposal for eastern Nevada Wilderness, provided that such legislation does not include special provisions or exceptions which weaken the protections contained in the Wilderness Act of 1964. next >> |
