LIMITATION OF OFF-ROAD VEHICLES ON FOREST SERVICE LANDS

The Forest Service is presently inventorying roads and trails on national forest lands.  It will designate specific roads and trails that will be open to use by off-road vehicles, with no cross-country travel allowed.  All other routes will be closed to ORVs. Selection of roads and trails designated to be open to ORVs will be based on previous use, public input, and environmental considerations, such as watershed and riparian area conflicts or conflicts with wildlife.

The Federation of Western Outdoor Clubs strongly supports the Forest Service's efforts to designate certain roads and routes for ORV use and eliminate cross-country use by ORVs.  The Federation urges the Forest Service to prohibit ORV use of undesignated roads and routes and cross-country travel and should enforce those prohibitions.  Designated ORV routes should be selected only when it is shown it will not cause adverse environmental impacts.
