Background: Several new coal-fired power plants have been proposed in Nevada despite the fact that Nevada has no coal. Proponents claim that the new plants are clean--ignoring the fact that these plants generate huge quantities of carbon dioxide, the principal constituent of greenhouse gases. The technology to build clean coal-gasification plants at altitudes over 2,000 feet does not exist. Coal-fired plants also use a large amount of water, a scarce commodity in Nevada--the driest state in the United States, and coal-fired power plants add to global warming. California has banned receiving power from coal-fired plants. Nevada is rich in alternative energy resources, which include geothermal, wind, and solar, and these resources need to be utilized more effectively. Resolution: The Federation of Western Outdoor Clubs opposes the building of any new coal-fired power plants in Nevada and supports the use of alternative energy resources to provide power. next >> |
