OPPOSE LARGE DEVELOPMENTS OR GAMBLING CASINOS ON SAN FRANCISCO BAY AND SAN PABLO BAY

Background:

When Golden Gate Fields (a racetrack on the shoreline of San Francisco Bay) near Albany closes in a year, a developer proposes to build a shopping mall on the site. Because there already is a shopping mall about a mile away, this development is unnecessary. As of now, the developer has backed off, but the land is not part of the Eastshore Park and is not protected.

Point Molate is on San Pablo Bay and is owned by Chevron and the U.S. Navy. The threat to build a Las Vegas style casino and hotel complex there is very much alive. Chevron went to court to try to get open space designated beside its operation. Chevron lost, but there is a great deal of opposition from neighboring communities to building a casino.

Sylvia McLaughlin of the Save the Bay Association says: "We want to save the shoreline for open space in a necklace of shoreline parks from Crockett to San Jose."

Resolution:

The Federation of Western Outdoor Clubs opposes allowing new large developments or gambling casinos on San Francisco Bay and San Pablo Bay.
