CLEAN AIR |
|
|
The National Commission on
Air Quality in the new Administration is proposing changes in the Clean
Air Act of 1977, by shifting the responsibility to the state
governments. There is no assurance that all fifty states will
enact Clean Air laws as stringent as the federal regulation.
Heavy polluter industries will be attracted to states with lax
environmental laws. |
|
The Clean Air Act protects
our health, our environment, and our property. 140 million
Americans still breath unhealthy air and thousands die from
pollution-related illnesses. Dirty air erodes property and
reduces visibility. Acid rain kills fish, damages crops and
forests, and destroys lakes. |
||
The Administration
proposes to base the standards on what it calls "real health risk" with
a slow down on the time table to achieve these modified
standards. The effectiveness of agencies that implement the
Occupational, Health, and Safety Act will be diminished. |
||
Accordingly, the Federation of
Western Outdoor
Clubs urges the strengthening of the Clean Air Act and the
Occupational, Health, and Safety act, rather than weakening the Acts. |
