TRAILS: AN ENDANGERED SPECIES
ISSUE
Trails are becoming an
endangered species. In 1946 there were 144,060 miles of trails in
the United States and only 107,731 miles of roads. By 1983 trails
had decreased 32 percent, to 98,825 miles, and roads had increased 300
percent, to 321,000 miles.
As the number of hiking
in the Northwest and the nation has grown, the number of trails has
steadily declined. Hikers have already lost 32 percent of the
trails to road building; to accommodate future logging, the Forest
Service may destroy another 10 to 20 percent in the next 10 years.
Funding for trail
maintenance and trail construction is inadequate while funding for
roads is abundant.
STATUS
The House Appropriations
Committee will be dealing with this issue when they return after Labor
Day.
WHAT TO DO
The Federation of
Western
Outdoor Clubs recommends increased funding for America's trails by
urging Congress to increase funding for trail maintenance from $23.8
million to $30 million; to increase funding for trail construction from
$15.4 million to $45 million; and to reduce funding for the Forest
Service's road program by $100,362,000. |
