PACIFIC
CREST NATIONAL SCENIC TRAIL |
Recently in the Mt.
Baker/Snoqualmie Forest area of Northern Washington the Pacific Crest
National Scenic Trail, PCNST, has been logged across, destroying parts
of the trail tread and making it difficult to find. |
|
Near the Columbia Gorge
Scenic Forest, Washington's Department of Natural Resources, DNR,
clear-cut 48 acres along the PCNST. The far side of the trail was
used as the clear-cut boundary. |
|
The DNR intends to
clear-cut another 153 acres across the PCNST. Other segments of
this trail are to be logged. |
|
While the enabling
legislation, as amended, is to show the management of the land, whether
timber management, range management or mining along the PCNST, a nature
corridor can benefit those enjoying this scenic trail. |
|
An interim agreement on a
PCNST segment includes a nature corridor of (1) no logging within 150'
of the PCNST, and (2) no clear-cutting within one-half mile of the
PCNST. |
|
The Federation of
Western
Outdoor Clubs recommends the creation of a nature corridor along both
sides of the PCNST where appropriate. |
