FWOC RESOLUTION #9 |
_PROTECTION OF URBAN AND SUBURBAN OPEN
SPACES_
|
In urban and suburban
areas of the country significant natural areas, open spaces, forests,
wetlands, riparian corridors and wildlife habitat are being threatened
by development. Such development could alter the adjacent
environment, causing the loss of native cover, fragmentation of
pre-existing ecological systems and a reduction in the diversity of
native plants and wildlife. |
Several metropolitan areas
have realized that as they grow they need to protect significant
natural areas within their boundaries so that these areas can be
enjoyed by their present and future citizens. Oakland,
California, and Portland, Oregon, are examples of cities that are
working to protect natural areas and make them more accessible. |
The Federation of
Western
Outdoor Clubs recommends that member clubs support and actively
participate in natural area protection programs by: |
1. Educating and
informing club members about these programs.
2. Encouraging club members to get personally involved, 3. Scheduling volunteer efforts that will help implement these programs as club activities. |
Where a community does not
have an ongoing natural areas protection program, the Federation of
Western Outdoor Clubs member clubs should work with the community to
develop interest in and support for such a program. |
