MINING BUCKHORN MOUNTAIN IN WASHINGTON STATE
1995 FWOC
Resolution
No. 13:
|
|
The Battle Mountain Gold
Company has a proposal for mining in Washington State's Buckhorn
Mountain. The proposal includes a 138-acre open pit mine on
national forest lands, and adversely affecting an aquifer that feeds
five creeks. Battle Mountain would place a toxic tailings
impoundment on top of a creek and destroy a square mile of critical
wildlife habitat.
|
The project is flawed in
both scope and design. The ecological consequences could be
harmful for generations. The Battle Mountain Gold Company is
noted for using poor mining practices, and for cutting corners of
required mining regulations, regardless of the harmful results.
|
|
The Federation of Western
Outdoor Clubs opposes any mining in the area of Buckhorn Mountain. |
