TREE-FREE PAPER
1995 FWOC
Resolution
No. 22:
|
|
Paper is not only made
from trees, but it is also made from hemp, esparto, bagasse, kenaf, and
other fiber crops. For example, in China over 80% of the paper is
currently made form wheat straw. For many centuries, most of
China's paper came from wheat of rice straw.
|
Thanks to the efforts of a
growing network of visionary paper distributors, and their customers,
non-wood or tree-free paper is once again available in the U.S.
Such has not been the cased for about fifty years.
|
|
It is outrageous to use
old growth forests merely for paper pulp. Paper cannot be
recycled endlessly. Tree-free fiber sources generally produce
more fiber per acre, per year than wood fiber does.
|
An article that is
currently labeled "recycled paper" may actually not contain more than
10% or 20% post-consumer paper. Non-wood paper is less expensive
to produce and the process is completely non-polluting.
|
|
The Federation of Western
Outdoor Clubs recommends to the member clubs that they seek out, and
use, sources of tree-free paper whenever practical. |
