FEDERATION OF WESTERN OUTDOOR CLUBS
PROTECTING THE OPAL CREEK DRAINAGE IN OREGON
1995 FWOC
Resolution
No. 4:
|
|
The Opal Creek Drainage in
Oregon's Willamette National Forest is the last large-scale, uncut old
growth forest left in the Pacific Northwest. There are stands of
Douglas fir, western hemlock, western red cedar, Pacific yew, vine
maple, red alder, noble fir and silver fir. There is also a grove
of cedars estimated to be 1000 years old. The Opal Creek
watershed consists of 35,000 acres that contains seven waterfalls, may
species of plants and animals, along with numerous hiking trails.
|
Jawbone Flats, once the
headquarters for mining operations is now the headquarters for the
Friends of Opal Creek. This non-profit organization works to
protect Opal Creek as well as carries on a valuable educational and
research program.
|
|
Currently, under the
Clinton Forest Plan, Opal Creek is designated as a late successional
reserve, and a tier-one watershed. However, even this level of
protection could be reversed by a new administration or by Congress.
|
The Federation of Western
Outdoor Clubs supports full and permanent protection of the entire
35,000 acres of the Opal Creek Drainage system. |
