1996 FWOC
Resolution
No. 16:
BOLSA CHICA WETLANDS AND MESA
|
|
The Bolsa Chica Wetlands
in Huntington Beach, California, is the largest unprotected coastal
wetland area south of San Francisco. It provides a vital habitat
along the Pacific Flyway to at least five endangered bird species.
|
The Koll Real Estate Group
-- some seven developers in all -- wish to build 3500 housing units on
a portion of these wetlands.
|
|
Of the 1200 acres
encompassed by these wetlands, the State of California owns some 300
acres, of which 200 have been restored by the Army Corps of Engineers
to wetlands. Two thousand homes are to slated to be built on 200
acres of the wetlands, but with adverse effects on the remainder of the
wetlands. Moreover, an additional 900 homes would be built on the
nearby mesa area with further run-off effect on the wetlands.
|
The Bolsa Chica Land
Trust, established three years ago, has been formed to combat this
threat to this vital wetland area.
|
|
The Federation of Western
Outdoor Clubs wholeheartedly endorses this vital effort to preserve and
enhance on of the West coast's premier wetlands from destructive
development.
|
|

Members and Member Clubs of the Federation

destructive development should contact the following with their

wetlands are located, and who favors the Trust's efforts to preserve
the wetlands through purchase of the area. Supervisor Silva's
address is: 10 Civic Center Place, 5th Floor, Santa Ana, CA 92701

|
The California Coastal
Commission*, at either its San Francisco or Long Beach offices
|
|
Letters of encouragement
to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers* for their part in wetland
restoration would also be beneficial in behalf of the Bolsa Chica Land
Trust's restoration goals
