1996 FWOC
Resolution
No. 17:
BALLONA WETLANDS ECO-SYSTEM
|
|
The Ballona Wetlands
eco-system, near Marina del Rey in Los Angeles County, is that county's
last large wetlands system. The future of this wetland is
threatened by a planned "development" -- the largest such development
in the history of Los Angeles county.
|
To preserve this wetland
in the face of this destructive development, the Angeles chapter of the
Sierra Club has formed a "Preserve Ballona Wetlands Task Force."
The Task Force's goal is to implement the official request of the U.S.
Fish and Wildlife Service to acquire from the developers 139 acres of
the Ballona wetlands. This will be restored by the Army Corps of
Engineers using funds provided to the Engineers from its own budget as
well as funds provided through the Task Force.
|
|
The Federation of Western
Outdoor Clubs supports the "Preserve Ballona Wetlands" Task Force.
