1996 FWOC
Resolution
No. 7:
CRISSY FIELD WETLANDS AT PRESIDIO OF SAN
FRANCISCO
|
|
Crissy Field is an unused
airfield facility located in the Presidio of San Francisco, which is a
part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, and under the
jurisdiction of the National Park Service.
|
Many years ago, the area
that is now Crissy Field was a wetland, but it was filled in by the
U.S. Army for use as an airfield during the early years of aviation.
|
|
In the United States,
wetlands are disappearing at a rapid rate. Wetland preservation
and restoration are among today's more important environmental
issues. Such protection is especially important for the
edification of urban children. A twenty to thirty-acre wetland
could be made by restoring the Crissy Field area back to a
near-original condition. This would provide children (and people
of all ages) with unique opportunities to learn about the wonders of
wetlands - and how wetlands serve as a habitat for migratory birds and
fish. Such an educational wetland is particularly needed within
an urban area such as San Francisco.
|
At a public hearing in San
Francisco in July, 1996, the vast majority of public comments on plans
for the Crissy Field area favored the wetland restoration
project. Because of the importance of wetlands in the
environmental picture, the Federation of Western Outdoor Clubs supports
the concept of restoration of the original wetland in the Crissy Field
area.
