1997 FWOC Resolution
No. 10:
|
SUPPORT FOR FUNDING FOR RESTORATION OF LAKE TAHOE
|
|
On July 25th and 26th,
1997, President Clinton and Vice President Gore presided at a historic
summit on the shores of beautiful Lake Tahoe. The three major
problems identified by panels of scientists, environmentalists and
local residents were:
|
1. Increasing
degradation of Tahoe's outstanding clarity (the clearest in the world).
|
2. Loss of forest
surrounding the lake because of past logging practices, suppression of
natural fire, and the effects of drought and beetle damage.
|
|
3. Increased use of
automobiles on the roads around the lake, resulting in air and water
pollution, traffic jams, and parking problems.
|
The President and Vice
President pledged $50 million for the next two years to help with these
problems. Governors Bob Miller of Nevada and Pete Wilson of
California also pledged funds for this effort. It is estimated
that the solution of these problems may take almost one billion dollars
over the next ten to fifteen years if the health of this priceless
resource is to be saved. So although this is a good start,
continual funding at or above this level will be necessary to overcome
these problems.
|
|
The Federation of Western
Outdoor Clubs strongly supports the financial commitment made by the
President and Vice President and Governors Wilson and Miller and urge
that this commitment be continued until Lake Tahoe is restored and
protected.
