1997 FWOC Resolution
No. 2:
|
PROTECTION OF PACIFIC SALMON
|
|
The once teeming runs of
anadromous Pacific salmon has dwindled to a tragic longtime low due to
a number of factors including:
|
1. The clearcutting
of watersheds, which alters stream temperatures and results in
streamside erosion and siltation, impairing salmon spawning habitat for
returning salmon.
|
2. The pollution of
salmon bearing streams and rivers by agricultural and industrial
chemical waste.
|
|
3. Certain dams that
prevent returning salmon passage to their spawning areas.
|
4. Intense
competition for returning Pacific salmon has resulted in overfishing
and intense conflict between Canadian and American (Alaskan and
Washington) fishermen resulting in the so called "salmon wars."
|
|
The Federation of Western
Outdoor Clubs recommends:
|
|
1. The cessation of
clearcutting of the forests in the watersheds on public and private
lands.
2. The clearup of polluted waterways.
3. The removal of certain dams that obstruct salmon passage.
4. The calling of a negotiating conference of representatives of
Canada and the United States to agree on regulations to protect Pacific
salmon.
