1997 FWOC Resolution
No. 26:
|
RESOLUTION OF CONDOLENCE
|
|
Our Vice President,
Winchell Hayward, learned this past week from your Executive Director,
Keith Mischke, of the untimely accidental death this month of Terry
Becker, a recent past president of the Mazamas and a veteran
climber. We understand that Terry and his wife Barbara were
members of a 23 person Mazama climbing team which had just climbed the
Vedderhorn in the Swiss Alps, and that Terry fell to his death during
the descent.
|
The member clubs of the
Federation of Western
Outdoor Clubs, in convention here assembled, were shocked to learn of
this tragic event and wish to convey their deepest sympathy and
condolences to Terry's widow, Barbara, and to all of Terry's family and
his friends and co-workers in the Mazamas. It is of some
consolation to know that Terry died doing the thing that he loved to
do, and that in his mind he must have prepared himself for such an
eventuality long ago. The climbing party's decision to continue
and complete the scheduled climbing expedition despite this terrible
tragedy is unquestionably what Terry would have wanted them to do under
the circumstances, and shows a degree of courage and fortitude that is
in the highest traditions of the Mazamas and of mountaineering. |
