FEDERATION OF WESTERN OUTDOOR CLUBS
RESOLUTION
#14: SUPPORT FOR PRESCRIBED BURNING IN THE WESTERN STATES (Tamalpais
Conservation Club, Jack Walker)
|
|
The Federation of Western Outdoor Clubs
supports "prescribed burns" as an integral part of fire management
policies in both wildland and urban-wildland interfaces (outside of
designated wilderness and biological preserve areas) in an effort to
sustain the health of forest and wildland ecosystems throughout the
Western United States of America.
|
Fire historically has
played a major role in shaping grassland and forest ecosystems.
Due to decades of official policies of fire suppression, naturally
occurring, low-intensity fires have not cleared underbrush and dead and
diseased trees. Therefore, nutrients and seeds have not been
returned to the forest floor, swamps, marshes, and meadows. Also,
in recent years, the result has been large, hot, destructive fires
which kill large numbers of trees capable of surviving smaller fires.
|
|
Please contact: The U.S,
Forest Service, the National Park SErvice, and the Bureau of land
Management to urge them to use prudently administered prescribed
burning to mitigate fuel buildup.
