FEDERATION OF WESTERN OUTDOOR CLUBS
RESOLUTION
#9: SUPPORTING THE NATIVE ECOSYSTEM ALTERNATIVE IN THE HELLS CANYON
NATIONAL RECREATION AREA (Obsidians, Shirley Cameron)
|
|
The Federation of Western Outdoor Clubs
supports the Native Ecosystem Alternative in the Environmental Impact
Statement for the management of the Hells Canyon National Recreation
Area which gives priority to the protection of wilderness values, fish
and wildlife habitat, and unique ecosystems.
|
A coalition of local
native American tribes, conservation advocacy groups, a forester, a
geologist, a hunter, a botanist, and a former Forest Service ranger
developed the Native Ecosystem Alternative. The Wallowa-Whitman
National Forest initially declined to include this alternative but
citizen pressure prompted the addition of the Alternative. The
comment deadline was June 15, 2000, but it is still important to send
letters.

|
Please contact: Karyn Wood,
Supervisor, Wallowa-Whitman National Forest, P.O. Box 907, Baker City,
OR 97814, to support the Native Systems Alternative and to ask that no
old growth be logged, that the Hells Canyon Rim Trail be closed to
motor vehicles, that livestock not be reintroduced into
livestock-free grasslands, that the 31 miles of Wild and Scenic River
be non-motorized, and that proper monitoring be a condition for
continuation of any commercial or motorized activity.
