RESOLUTION #1: BURNS BOG

Burns Bog, located 15 miles northwest of the Peace Arch at the U.S./Canadian border in British Columbia, is the only known estuarine raised peat bog in a Mediterranean-like climate.  It is the largest such bog on the west coast of the Americas.  It is a biological oxygen producer, pollution scrubber (filters water and controls flooding) and is a carbon sink (retaining the equivalent CO2) emissions of 5.2 million cars while it remains intact).
This rare environmental jewel is an island of subarctic environment which provides important and even necessary habitat for many birds, animals, and plants including rare and endangered species.

Past practices including legal and illegal draining, peat mining, garbage disposal, and farming have resulted in significant damage to the bog.  Recurring plans for further commercialization, including extensive monoculture farming and the establishment of an amusement-type park, would ultimately lead to the destruction of most of the environmental and ecological benefits of this unique area.
The importance of conserving Burns Bog has been internationally recognized, including resolutions of support from the 1995 Peatland Conference, Edinburgh, Scotland.

The Federation of Western Outdoor Clubs supports the immediate protection and long-term preservation of Burns Bog as a natural preserve.

Please contact: The Right Hon. Jean Chretien, Prime Minister of Canada, House of Commons, Parliament Buildings, Ottawa, Ontario K1A 0A6 (no postage necessary in CN); (US residents contact: The Prime Minster of Canada c/o Embassy of Canada, Chancery, 501 Pennsylvania Ave. N.W., Washington, DC 20001) and request that immediate action be taken.  For further information contact: Burns Bog Conservation Society at 1.888.850.6264 www.burnsbog.org
