FEDERATION OF WESTERN OUTDOOR CLUBS

RESOLUTION #39: THREATENED GRIZZLY BEARS IN BRITISH COLUMBIA

In the United States, the Forest Service has established habitat protection performance standards for grizzly bear recovery ecosystems.  Authorities there rely on the cooperation of authorities in British Columbia and elsewhere in Canada in pursuit of their recovery plans for populations of grizzly bears that are threatened or endangered.  However, British Columbia also has populations of grizzly bears that are threatened.
The action of the new British Columbia government in canceling a province-wide moratorium on hunting of grizzly bears is giving rise to concern.

The Federation of Western Outdoor Clubs urges British Columbia to reintroduce that moratorium on grizzly bear hunting and to adopt a goal of zero tolerance for all other human caused mortalities of these bears.  The Federation also urges British Columbia to adopt habitat protection performance standards at least as stringent as those of the United States.
